~ Chapter 29 ~
After their Sunday lunch, Eleanor decided to take advantage of Liliâs return to Springbrook House to accompany her. It gave her the excuse of seeing Ian again without an invitation. There hadnât been a day gone by when she hadnât thought of him. If her instincts were correct, he was attracted to her, too.
She had rather enjoyed the hum in his house created by all the activities when first sheâd visited. It was something which was missing from her brotherâs house with only the servants to fill it.
Ianâs cook, Mrs. Page, was a warm, welcoming woman who could put anyone at ease. The kitchen had comforting smells, as well as being warm and comfy. What was there not to like?
Eleanor smiled as she considered Ian with all his charges. She would never have suspected that the rather taciturn man she had first met had such a soft heart. The more time she passed with him, the more she liked him. That, combined with her physical attraction to him, meant he drew her like a magnet.
âIâm curious,â said Eleanor. âHow do you know Doctor Russell? I presume you knew him from the time when he was living in Edinburgh?â
Lili wasnât sure how much she should reveal about her and Ianâs relationship, so she kept it simple.
âSociety in Edinburgh is not as large as it is in London. Our families moved in the same circles so our paths were bound to cross.â She did not elaborate on how much. âHis interests were not the same as mine, so there would not have been much to draw us together.â It wasnât quite the truth but it wasnât completely false either.
Eleanor nodded and didnât ask more.
In the carriage on the way to Springbrook house, Lili took the opportunity to question Eleanor about herself and her family.
âAre you and your family from Yorkshire?â she asked.
âBorn and bred,â replied Eleanor. âOur parents live here but we do have family in London and cousins scattered around the country, but I was born in York, as was my brother. He has had the good fortune to have lived in India for some time. It has made him appreciate life in England, all the better.â
âThis is the first time Iâve been away from Scotland. I have enjoyed meeting the English, who donât have a very good reputation with the Scots, you know,â said Lili.
âWe, English, imagine the Scots to be barbarians, but I have never had anything to criticise. Those Iâve met have been ladies or gentlemen,â Eleanor commented with a smile as she thought of Ian.
âIâm afraid we have our scoundrels, too,â replied Lili with a grimace.
Eleanor had not thought about the Scot who had betrayed Lili. Of course, unfaithful men abounded no matter the country.
âI suppose one has to be on oneâs guard wherever one lives, which is terribly unfair,â Eleanor said, almost to herself. âIâm afraid I would be tempted to get my revenge on an adulterous man who deceived me.â
âBelieve me, I am bitter, but if I were to expose the man for the rake that he is, I would also be exposing myself.
